Chinese Scholar’s Garden – Hamilton Gardens: An Original Landscape painting by Artist Kirsten McIntosh
Inspired by the quiet beauty of Hamilton Gardens’ Chinese Scholar’s Garden, this painting explores atmosphere, memory, and the contrast between shadow and light.
In this scene, the pavilion sits in the distance, catching the early morning light, while most of the garden is still in shade. From the darker tunnel, you look out across water filled with lilies, back toward that soft light on the pavilion. I really wanted to focus on that contrast—light and shadow—and the calm, quiet feeling it creates.
It’s a garden full of little moments, the sound of bamboo, the feeling of stepping from cool shade into light. Over the years, this garden has become woven into my family memories, visits with my mum and nana, and now walks through the same pathways with my own children. That quiet sense of connection across generations is something I wanted this painting to hold.
It’s a more gentle kind of “wow” than the bright flower gardens, but it stays with you just as much.
