‘Chalice New Millenium: NZ Landscape Painting’: An Original Acrylic painting of a landmark in Christchurch named Chalice by Artist Kirsten McIntosh
Chalice New Millenium: NZ Landscape Painting. This artwork was created as I chose to exhibit in Christchurch. I wanted to paint a piece that meant something to the people of Christchurch. The city has dealt with a lot since the 2011 earthquakes. I felt that this landmark was something special to paint. The Chalice sculpture celebrates the new millennium and the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Christchurch and Canterbury.
On one of my parents regular trips to Christchurch and the South Island. They stop in to visit family and often head in to the city to see how it is being rebuilt. On this particular trip they captured this amazing image of The Chalice and it was shortly after the millenium, hence the name.
The most tricky part of this painting was of course the Chalice with its intricate leaves (mapou, kowhai, mahoe, totara, karamu, titoki, ngaio, maratata and koromiko) and trying to get the shimmer in the steel.
For the most part I always want my works to look consistent. Hence only six or seven colours are used in my paintings. I am trying to achieve harmony within the painting and my whole landscape series.
